The exposure to the sun should be avoided for several months after such an operation because the scalp has to heal properly and the follicles have to take root.
Below, our hair transplant surgeons in Istanbul explain why you should avoid sun exposure after such an operation and the best ways to do that.
How does the sun affect a hair transplant?
The sun has a direct option on all the uncovered areas of our bodies when these are exposed, however, when we are talking about skin that has also been affected by surgery, this action will more aggressive. In the case of a hair transplant, direct sun exposure can harm the recipient area and the transplanted grafts, which is why patients are advised to avoid sun exposure during the first months after a hair transplant operation. This is also because most of the times people choose summer to have a hair transplant. If you want to know more details about the hair transplant procedure we invite you to visit our homepage where you will find a complete guide on hair transplant in Turkey.
From a medical point of view, patients should know that the skin contains chromatophores (the cells responsible for skin pigmentation) which will usually darken when exposed to the sun, however, after a hair transplant that skin can no longer activate the chromatophores, as these can become inactive or even die. This is not a permanent situation, as the chromatophores will regenerate once the transplanted grafts will start growing.
Our doctors in Turkey will also recommend patient with specific ointments which will help them recover faster after such a procedure. Even if the skin heals after using such ointments and topic medication, sun exposure should be avoided in order to protect the transplanted grafts.
Why do I have to avoid sun exposure after a hair transplant in Turkey?
If you expose yourself to the sun after a hair restoration, this could not only harm the skin but the hair follicles as well.
Our Turkey hair transplant physicians generally recommend our patients who have undergone such procedures to maintain the new hair restoration covered for the first two months, of which the first couple of weeks are extremely important.
Exposing to too much sun may harm the grafts and it could make them not attach correctly, having a negative impact on the new hair growth.
The following month and a half, though, the head is still healing, despite the fact that the newly transplanted hairs are fortified.
The skin is still sensitive to sun exposure, therefore it is advisable to hide the scalp from being exposed to the sun for extended periods of time.
The duration to avoid sun exposure after a hair transplant in Turkey
When considering the duration for which sun exposure should be avoided, the doctor will first take into account the patient-specific characteristics and the hair transplant procedure employed. In other words, there is no timeframe for all patients to avoid sun exposure, and they should take into consideration the following:
- a hair transplant operation implies an incision where the harvested grafts will be implanted, and thus ultraviolet rays will have a more aggressive action on the affected skin;
- the transplanted grafts need time to grow and adapt which will influence the immune system and especially the new hairs;
- a hair transplant will most likely cause hypersensitivity at least during the first months which under direct sunlight can worsen;
- the sun can also affect healthy skin around the area where the hair transplant took place by discoloring it.
This is why the minimum duration for avoiding sun exposure after a hair transplant is of around 4 months, however, most of the doctors will recommend avoiding direct exposure to the sun is 6 months. This is also the proper timeframe for the skin to heal and the hair grafts to start growing after going through all the post hair transplant phases.
Apart from these, each patient can react differently to sun exposure after a hair transplant, and at our hair transplant clinic in Istanbul, the recommendations made by our doctors will be customized.
How can I protect the scalp after a hair transplant in Istanbul?
If you have undergone a hair transplant procedure in Istanbul, there is no need to worry about exposing the head to short periods of time under the sun, such as when you are walking across the parking lot to your car.
However, for longer exposure to the sunlight, the scalp should be protected. The grafted zone can be protected in several ways.
You could wear a cap, or you could comb the existing hair over the grafts to protect them from the sunlight. Alternatively, you could utilize a sunscreen after a hair transplant in Turkey.
For instance, when you go to the beach and you intend to go into the water, it is recommendable that you apply a heavy coating of waterproof sunscreen on your face, as well as the scalp.
Sunscreen after a hair transplant operation
We all know that the most effective way of protecting our skin from the sun is by applying sunscreen. This is also available after undergoing a hair transplant, however, this can be applied on the scalp or the area where the hair transplant was performed after three months from the operation. Also, the minimum protection factor of the sun blocker should be 30 or more. The sunscreen can also take the form of a spray which will help prevent touching the transplanted area. Our doctors can make other recommendations with respects to the ointments and creams which can be used after a hair transplant.
Tips on avoiding sunlight after a hair transplant procedure
If you decide to undergo a hair transplant or have just undergone such a procedure, there are a few things you should know, and which should help you prevent the unpleasant effects of sun exposure:
- you will not be fully prohibited from going outside, however, you should avoid doing that in the afternoon when the sun is at its peak;
- you can use hats or other headpieces to protect the scalp, however, these should be loose so that they only cover the head and not constrict it;
- if it is summer, you should avoid entering swimming pools and the sea, as the water usually contains many impurities;
- if you use sunscreen, make sure the incisions have fully healed before applying any lotion on scarred skin;
- if you feel any discomfort even after 3 months or more from the hair transplant, do not hesitate to contact your doctor in order to know what to do.
