General introduction to the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

Opened in 2004, the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art contains artwork from Turkish, as well as foreign artists, even though its main purpose is to display the modern art creation of Turkey.

As one of the main tourist attractions of the city, the Museum accommodates a wide variety of interdisciplinary activities, including temporary and permanent exhibition galleries, a photography one and spaces for social and educational programs.

The Istanbul Modern hosts a restaurant, a cinema, a wide-ranging library and a design store, as well.

The modern art displayed in the Istanbul Modern

When entering the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, you will be guided by an art expert through the collections of art on display here. You will be able to make an imaginary journey through the political and social movement which had a direct impact on the modern art in Turkey.

Starting with the late Ottoman period to more modern artworks and then passing through the transition of the country to becoming a Republic and its turning westward, you will be guided along the creation of the modern art in the country.

Since the artwork of Turkey has always been deeply connected to the politics of each era, the displays will invite to interesting dialogues about the more general sociopolitical environments.
